Kaden Coleman was a 10-year-old Black boy described by those who knew him as a bright, joyful child and a beacon of love. His death was a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, and the entire Cleveland community, which came together to mourn him with a balloon release where his mother expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.
On the evening of February 7, 2025, Kaden was sitting in the backseat of a car with his mother and a 35-year-old male driver.
As the man was backing out of a driveway near East 147th Street and Edgewood Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, two men approached in a rental car and fired multiple shots into their vehicle before fleeing. A bullet struck Kaden in the head. The driver rushed him to the city's Fourth District police station, and from there, Cleveland EMS transported him to UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. He died from his injuries just after 2 a.m. the following morning.
The investigation quickly led police to a residence in Maple Heights. On February 10, 2025, officers executed a search warrant at the home, where they discovered a drug lab containing over 550 grams of cocaine. They arrested Jeffrey Grant, then 34, and his wife, Lanaemarshe Grant, then 33. Authorities later identified a second shooter, Khalif Muhammed, and the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force offered a reward for information leading to his capture.
A Cuyahoga County grand jury returned an indictment charging Jeffrey Grant with multiple offenses, including aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder, and felonious assault. Lanaemarshe Grant was indicted on charges that included involuntary manslaughter and drug trafficking.
In February 2026, Jeffrey and Lanaemarshe Grant were tried together in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. A jury found them both guilty of all charges. Jeffrey Grant, 35, was convicted of three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, involuntary manslaughter, four counts of felonious assault, and several drug and weapons offenses. Lanaemarshe Grant, 34, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, possession and trafficking of cocaine, and possessing criminal tools. A judge also found both guilty of having weapons while under disability.
In March 2026, Jeffrey Grant was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 57.5 years. Lanaemarshe Grant was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
