Detective George Zicarelli, aged 52, was a dedicated officer with the Cleveland Division of Police. On September 17, 1979, while on an extradition assignment in New York City, Detective Zicarelli was tragically shot and killed. He and two other officers from the Cleveland Police Department were exiting their vehicle in the parking lot of the Skyway Motel near La Guardia Airport in Queens when three suspects approached them and attempted to rob them.
Detective Zicarelli and the other officers identified themselves as police officers, but one of the suspects opened fire, killing Detective Zicarelli. The suspects then stole the officers' vehicle and fled.
The suspects were quickly apprehended by detectives from the New York City Police Department. Two of the suspects, both 17 years old, were captured the next day, while the third suspect, aged 19, turned himself into a local television station. On May 23, 1980, the oldest suspect was convicted of second-degree murder, attempted robbery, and grand larceny, and was sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled on March 13, 2017. Another suspect was convicted of criminal possession of a weapon and grand larceny and was paroled on July 8, 1982.
Detective Zicarelli had served with the Cleveland Division of Police for 33 years and was scheduled to retire in six months. He was survived by his five children and three grandchildren. Detective Zicarelli's father and two uncles also served with the Cleveland Police Department. His funeral services were held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, and he was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland.
Detective Zicarelli's death was a significant loss to the Cleveland Police Department and the community he served. His dedication and sacrifice are remembered and honored by his family, friends, and fellow officers.
