On the evening of February 20, 2025, Rashaad Joshua Sinclair, a 27-year-old Black man, was fatally shot in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in a parking lot on Lucena Street, following a dispute. Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to an emergency call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, they discovered Sinclair suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later determined that Sinclair had been meeting a woman for a drug transaction when two men approached them. The suspects reportedly brandished firearms and demanded Sinclair’s belongings before shooting him. They fled the scene with his bag, which contained drugs and money. Initially, police reported the location of the shooting as Olando Street but later corrected it to Lucena Street.
Following an extensive investigation, CMPD detectives identified Khanahnai Coleman, a 20-year-old man, as a suspect in the case. Authorities obtained warrants for his arrest, and on April 11, 2025, officers located and apprehended Coleman. He was transported to the Law Enforcement Center, where he was interviewed by homicide detectives before being transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Coleman faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held without bond.
Court documents revealed that Coleman had also sustained a gunshot wound during the incident. Surveillance footage from a hospital showed him being dropped off shortly after the shooting. Initially, Coleman provided false information about how he was injured. At the time of his hospital visit, he was found to be in possession of a large sum of cash.
The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and seek additional information. CMPD has urged anyone with knowledge of the case to contact their Homicide Unit or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
