On the evening of March 1, 2025, 28-year-old Sumer Massey was fatally shot in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Lucky Penny Street in the Freedom Division. Massey, a mother, was walking with a female friend when she was shot in the head. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene. Her friend witnessed the shooting, and the suspect fled immediately after the attack.
Following an investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department
authorities identified 53-year-old Stevie Bernard Walker as the suspect. Walker was arrested on March 16, 2025, by CMPD’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team and members of the Kannapolis Police Department. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Law Enforcement Center, where he was interviewed by homicide detectives before being transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Walker faces charges of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Records indicate that he had a prior conviction for first-degree kidnapping in 2006, for which he served a prison sentence. Massey’s next of kin have been notified of the arrest, and the investigation remains ongoing.
