In the late afternoon of January 27, 2025, tragedy struck in the Queens Village neighborhood, forever altering the lives of one family. Ikechukwu Onodu, a 20-year-old Black man, was in the lobby of the Cunningham Apartments on 86th Drive when his life was abruptly cut short. At approximately 4:39 PM, the sound of gunfire shattered the ordinary Monday afternoon.
Onodu was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the critically injured Onodu to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident marked the second homicide in the 107th Precinct for the year.
The New York Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing two men, believed to be in their mid-20s, fleeing the apartment complex on foot down 86th Drive shortly after the shots were fired. One of the suspects was described as wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt, while the other was dressed entirely in black.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Ikechukwu Onodu, and the police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to search for the two individuals responsible for this senseless act of violence.
