In what began as a typical afternoon errand, a trip to the grocery store on January 13, 2025, ended in tragedy for 47-year-old Jonathan Trent of Portland, Oregon. Trent, a White male, was fatally shot outside a Fred Meyer store in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Northeast Portland after he reportedly attempted to intervene in a robbery.
Around 3:50 p.m., police responded to calls of a robbery and gunshots in the store's parking lot.
Upon arrival, they discovered Trent on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner later confirmed that the cause of death was a homicide resulting from the gunshot wound.
According to police, Trent was leaving the store when he witnessed a purse-snatching and tried to step in to help the victim. It was during this act of intervention that he was shot by the fleeing suspects. Remembered as a man of warmth and kindness with a generous spirit, Trent was a devoted father to his 11-year-old son and an active member of his son's aquatic club community.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence led to the arrest of two juvenile suspects. A 16-year-old male was taken into custody on January 15, 2025, and a 15-year-old male was arrested on January 23, 2025. Both teenagers have been charged with murder and robbery in connection with the death of Jonathan Trent. The 16-year-old is also believed to be connected to a string of four other robberies that occurred in the two weeks leading up to the fatal shooting.
