On the evening of June 27, 1994, Lavell Clayton Thomas, a 39-year-old African-American man, was found lying in the street on Southwest 2nd Avenue, between Southwest Burnside and Ankeny in Portland, Oregon. Known on the street as "Twin," Thomas had sustained a fatal stab wound. Paramedics arrived at the scene around 8:30 p.m. but were unable to resuscitate him, and he died there on the street.
