On a tragic Saturday, April 26, 2025, the life of 25-year-old Anthony DeShawn Brown of Oklahoma City was cut short in a fatal encounter that began as a roadside dispute. The young man, known affectionately as 'Bubba' to his loved ones, was a welder for Alliance Steel and a devoted father to two young daughters. His family remembered him as a bright light whose smile could illuminate a room and whose kind and caring spirit was evident in his love for his family, music, and working on cars.
The events that led to Brown's untimely death unfolded from a road rage incident on Interstate 40 in Midwest City, a suburb of Oklahoma City. Brown was a passenger in a truck when they had a near-miss with a black Nissan Altima that failed to yield. The exchange of honks and gestures quickly escalated, with the occupants of the Altima yelling and making obscene gestures. The situation intensified as the Altima began to follow the truck. To avoid leading the aggressive drivers to a relative's home, the driver of the truck pulled into a residential neighborhood near Southeast 15th Street and Crosby Boulevard.
It was there that the confrontation turned physical. After both vehicles stopped, a fight broke out between the occupants. According to a witness, Brown was attempting to break up the altercation when he was shot multiple times. He was found on the ground with gunshot wounds and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A neighbor's 911 call brought police to the scene, where they found Brown bleeding on the ground.
In the hours following the shooting, police located the suspect vehicle, a black Nissan Altima, at a fast-food restaurant in the nearby community of Del City. Three individuals were taken into custody: two 21-year-old men and an 18-year-old woman who was identified as the driver. Initially, there was confusion regarding who fired the fatal shots, with the two male suspects reportedly blaming each other. A black revolver was also recovered from the vehicle. Subsequently, Travante Renty was charged with first-degree murder, and Angela Atkinson was charged with being an accessory. A witness who was in the car with the suspects eventually identified Renty as the person who pulled the trigger.
