In the early morning hours of April 9, 2024, the sound of gunshots shattered the peace near an apartment complex at 905 N. Rockwell in Oklahoma City. Responding to the disturbance, police officers discovered 22-year-old Koby Caraveo, a Black male, suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics were quickly summoned, and Caraveo was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that same day.
His death marked the 18th homicide in Oklahoma City for the year.
A short time after the shooting, authorities apprehended a suspect, identified as 28-year-old Christopher Burris. He was taken into custody and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center. The initial charges filed against Burris were for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction. At the time of his arrest, Caraveo was still alive, which is why the initial charges did not include murder. It was anticipated that the district attorney's office would amend the charges following Caraveo's death.
