Brandon Durham, a 43-year-old man, was fatally shot by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer on November 12, 2024, inside his home near Sunset Park. Durham had called 911 to report a home invasion. The officer involved in the shooting was identified as Alexander Bookman, a 26-year-old officer who had been with the department since 2021. Body-worn camera footage showed Bookman first shooting Durham in the head and then firing five additional shots after he fell.
Durham was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident sparked significant public outcry, with Durham's family demanding justice and accountability. His mother, Lenore DeJesus, expressed disappointment in the handling of the case, calling for the officer to be prosecuted. Durham's domestic partner, Rachael Gore, and other family members also voiced their frustration over the delay in legal proceedings.
Investigations into the shooting revealed that Bookman had been to Durham's home less than 24 hours before the fatal encounter. The home invasion suspect, identified as 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux, was reportedly struggling with Durham over a kitchen knife when Bookman arrived. Boudreaux was later charged with multiple offenses, including home invasion with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse, and disregard for the safety of persons resulting in death.
The Clark County District Attorney's office has been reviewing the case, with prosecutors expected to seek an indictment against Bookman. The delay in legal action has led to protests and rallies demanding accountability. Durham's family continues to push for justice, arguing that the evidence supports criminal charges against the officer.
