In the warm desert air of a Las Vegas evening on July 25, 2019, the life of 19-year-old Jae’Juan Williams, an African-American male, was tragically cut short. Gunfire shattered the night at the Sundance Village Apartments on West Charleston Boulevard. When officers, who were already at the complex investigating a separate shooting that had occurred just hours earlier, reached the other side of the property, they found Williams lying in the parking lot with what appeared to be multiple gunshot
wounds. He was rushed to University Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators believe that Williams was pursued through the parking lot by another man, with both individuals exchanging gunfire. The brazen nature of the shooting was underscored by the fact that it happened while police were present at the apartment complex for the prior incident. Despite the presence of witnesses to the chase and shooting, the assailant vanished before police could apprehend him. In the months that followed, no arrests were made in connection with Williams' death, leaving his family grappling with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
The grief was compounded for Williams' grandmother, Sheilah Johnson, with whom he had been living. They had recently mourned the passing of Williams' mother, and his sudden and violent death plunged the family into further despair. In an effort to generate leads, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department held a "Justice for Families" memorial in November of that year, hoping to encourage anyone with information to come forward. Detectives explored the possibility that the two shootings at the same apartment complex on the same day were related, but both cases remained unsolved. The motive behind the shooting that claimed Jae’Juan Williams’ life remains unclear.
