In the late days of December, the life of 20-year-old Tyrea James was tragically cut short in a shooting in Kenner, Louisiana. The male victim was killed on December 28th, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden violence. In the weeks that followed, investigators pieced together the events that led to his untimely death, culminating in the arrest of a suspect.
Utilizing a combination of modern policing techniques, Kenner police identified 21-year-old Keith A.
Cotton of Metairie as a person of interest in the case. Detectives meticulously reviewed surveillance video, employed vehicle recognition technology, and analyzed cell phone records to connect Cotton to the homicide. This digital trail ultimately placed him at the scene of the crime around the time of the shooting. Authorities also identified a 2015 black Nissan Altima, allegedly belonging to Cotton, as the vehicle seen fleeing the area shortly after James was killed.
On January 15th, with the assistance of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, the Kenner Police Department took Keith A. Cotton into custody. He is now facing serious charges, including first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and obstruction of justice. His prior conviction for aggravated second-degree battery legally prohibited him from owning a firearm.
