In the early hours of January 23, 2015, Andres Jaramillo, an 18-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot while sitting in his parked Honda Accord on Garfield Avenue in Revere, Massachusetts. Another teenager was in the car with him at the time but was not injured. The incident stemmed from a physical altercation that had occurred earlier in the day between an associate of the shooters and the other teen in Jaramillo's car.
The events leading to the tragedy began on January 22, 2015, when
Juan "Juanito" Gaviria was involved in a fight at school with a teen. Later that evening, Gaviria, then 18, and an older associate, 33-year-old Luis Urbaez, went searching for the individual Gaviria had fought. Around 2 a.m. on January 23, they located the teen in Jaramillo's parked car. Gaviria and Urbaez pulled up alongside the Honda and opened fire into the vehicle. Jaramillo was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene, though he was not the intended target.
Following an investigation by the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit and Revere Police detectives, both Gaviria and Urbaez were identified as the assailants. Gaviria was arrested and arraigned in December 2015, charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and firearms offenses. At the time of Gaviria's arraignment, Urbaez was still at large and was being sought by authorities. He was apprehended on December 16, 2015.
The two men were tried separately for their roles in the shooting. In September 2018, a Suffolk Superior Court jury convicted Luis Urbaez of second-degree murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He faced a mandatory life sentence. In a separate trial, Juan Gaviria was also convicted of second-degree murder and firearms charges.
