On February 28, 2025, a tragic sequence of events unfolded at a residence in the 5000 block of Cates Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, resulting in the death of 9-month-old Ophelia Lawery-Daniels. The African American infant was at home under the care of her father while her mother, Micah Lawery, briefly left the apartment to visit a nearby beauty supply store. Upon returning to the home around 8:00 p.m., Lawery entered the living room to a silent and devastating scene.
Seemingly guided by instinct, she turned on her cell phone flashlight and discovered the lifeless bodies of her daughter and the child's father on the couch, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Authorities from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the shooting call and arrived to find the young girl and her father, 21-year-old Zacchaeus Daniels, critically injured. Medical personnel pronounced Daniels dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Little Ophelia was rushed to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life, but she was subsequently pronounced deceased. Homicide detectives launched an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting and quickly determined the incident to be a murder-suicide, concluding that Daniels had shot his daughter before turning the weapon on himself.
Due to the nature of the incident, there were no arrests or trials, as the sole suspect died at the scene. In the aftermath, Micah Lawery expressed shock and heartbreak, noting that Daniels had been a loving partner and a good father who had no known history of violence toward her or their child. She did, however, disclose that he had struggled with mental health issues, though the specific motive for the sudden violence remained unclear. Lawery later described her daughter as a feisty, happy baby with a big personality who was deeply loved by her extended family, and the community rallied to support the grieving mother through a fundraising campaign.
