In the quiet neighborhood of Northwoods in St. Louis County, a concerned daughter's call for a welfare check on her mother unraveled a grim tragedy on the afternoon of August 16, 2025. When officers from the Northwoods Police Department arrived at the home of 64-year-old Sheila Mills on Begg Boulevard, they discovered a harrowing scene. The African-American woman was found deceased, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, her hands bound behind her back. The St.
Louis County Police Department's Bureau of Crimes Against Persons was called in to lead the homicide investigation.
The investigation into Sheila Mills' death quickly focused on a recently ended relationship. Less than a day before her body was discovered, Mills had sent a text message to 61-year-old Darryl Greenlee, terminating what police described as their 'turbulent' relationship. In the early hours of August 16, Greenlee, accompanied by 57-year-old Kevin Shelton, arrived at Mills' residence. Authorities allege that Greenlee forced his way into the home after yelling to get her attention and she opened the door.
Inside the home, the situation escalated. Police state that Shelton joined Greenlee inside, and later left in Mills' car. He allegedly used her debit card to withdraw $140 from her bank account before returning to the residence and honking twice. Following this signal, Greenlee exited the house, disposing of a trash bag in a nearby bin. This bag was later recovered by investigators and found to contain a tequila bottle with Greenlee's DNA on it. Mills' phone was also discovered discarded in a different location.
Based on the evidence gathered, both Darryl Greenlee and Kevin Shelton were arrested and charged in connection with the murder of Sheila Mills. The charges against both men are extensive, including first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, and three counts of armed criminal action. Following their arrests, they were held on a $2 million, cash-only bond.
