In the spring of 2025, a tragedy unfolded in a North St. Louis neighborhood, forever altering the lives of several families. On May 9th, 34-year-old Ariel Shaunta Eastling, a female resident of St. Louis, was found shot and killed inside a home on Wells Avenue. Her life was cut short in a violent act that also claimed the lives of two other individuals, 58-year-old James Rodriguez and 57-year-old Tyrone Mason.
Family members remember Ariel as a person who could light up a room and who deeply loved her family.
The discovery was made after police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the early morning hours. Upon their arrival, they first found Tyrone Mason deceased from a gunshot wound on the front porch of the residence. As law enforcement secured the area and awaited a search warrant, a man from inside the house, later identified as 61-year-old James Carter, briefly came outside and spoke with them before going back inside.
Moments later, Carter re-emerged from the home, this time armed with a rifle, and began firing at a St. Louis police officer and an ATF special agent who were on the scene. The officers returned fire, and Carter retreated into the house. A SWAT team was called to the location, and upon entering the home, they found Carter deceased near the front door. It was during the subsequent search of the residence that the bodies of Ariel Eastling and James Rodriguez were discovered. Eastling was found in the living room, while Rodriguez was located in the basement.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department identified James Carter, a convicted felon, as the suspect in the triple homicide. He was killed in the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, bringing a violent end to the tragic event. No officers or federal agents were injured during the incident. Investigators recovered five guns from the home, three of which were found near Carter. The motive for the shootings remains under investigation.
