On a Wednesday afternoon in Kentwood, Louisiana, a verbal dispute inside a gas station convenience store tragically escalated, leading to the death of 24-year-old ZyKerien Bickham. The incident, which occurred on January 29, 2025, began with an argument between Bickham and three other individuals for reasons that remain unclear. The disagreement spilled out into the parking lot of the Five Star Gas Station on Third Street, where the violence erupted.
As the confrontation in the parking
lot intensified, one of the three suspects brandished a firearm and opened fire. Bickham was struck by multiple gunshots and died at the scene. During the chaos, several rounds also hit Bickham's car, where his girlfriend was seated. Miraculously, she was not physically injured in the attack. Following the shooting, the three suspects fled the area on foot.
The Kentwood Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the identification and subsequent arrest of two of the suspects, 17-year-old Tyler Knox and 17-year-old Caleb Santacruze. Knox was charged with one count of principal to second-degree murder, one count of principal to illegal use of a dangerous weapon, and one count of principal to attempted second-degree murder. While in custody, it was determined that neither Knox nor Santacruze was the actual shooter.
Later, authorities identified the suspected gunman as 19-year-old Traviun Walton. A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and illegal use of a dangerous weapon. The death of ZyKerien Bickham marked the first homicide of the year in Kentwood and was the second fatal shooting to occur on that same street in approximately a month.
