A hunting trip in the Sandy Hollow Wildlife Management Area near Kentwood, Louisiana, ended in tragedy on the morning of December 28, 2024. Roberto Garcia, a 61-year-old male resident of Baton Rouge, was deer hunting in the area when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 8:45 a.m.
According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, another hunter in the vicinity fired his. 45 caliber muzzleloader, striking Garcia.
The shooter later told authorities that he had been aiming at a deer and was unaware of Garcia's presence behind his target due to dense vegetation in the area. By the time first responders arrived at the scene, Garcia had succumbed to his injuries.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is conducting a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting. As of late December 2024, the identity of the shooter had not been publicly released, and no charges had been filed in connection with the incident. Authorities have emphasized the importance of hunter safety, including wearing hunter orange and being certain of one's target and the surroundings before firing. The Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office has received Garcia's body.
