In the quiet town of Manistee, Michigan, the life of 68-year-old Melissa Ann Adkins-Haik came to a tragic end on January 12, 2025. A white female known for her positive presence and deep love for her family, especially her grandchildren, Melissa's death was a result of a devastating murder-suicide.
The incident unfolded at her residence on High Street, where police were dispatched at approximately 2:12 p.m. following a 911 call from a roommate.
Upon arrival, officers discovered both Melissa and her 61-year-old husband, Brett Haik, with what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the head. They were transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
An investigation involving multiple agencies, including the Michigan State Police, Manistee County Sheriff's Office, and the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Public Safety Department, concluded that Brett Haik fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. The Manistee City Police Department confirmed that evidence and autopsy results pointed to a murder-suicide. Toxicology reports later revealed the presence of cocaine, hydrocodone, and THC in both of their systems at the time of their deaths. The roommate who made the emergency call was interviewed by investigators but was ultimately ruled out as a suspect. The investigation into the deaths is now considered concluded by the Manistee City Police Department.
