On August 12, 2016, 73-year-old Margaret Jean Sanford was found deceased in her Napoleon Township, Michigan, home. Concerned after not seeing her for several days, neighbors requested a welfare check at her Clarklake Road residence. Responding officers from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department could see an unresponsive woman inside the house, but their entry was blocked by her 62-year-old husband, Roger Sanford.
Roger, who had a known history of mental illness and prior interactions
with law enforcement, refused to communicate with the officers or allow them access to the home. This led to a standoff, and the joint city-county strategic response team was called to the scene. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to establish contact with Roger, the tactical team made entry into the residence. Inside, they discovered the bodies of both Margaret and Roger Sanford.
Investigators determined that Margaret had been deceased for several days, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. It was also discovered that Margaret was battling terminal cancer at the time of her death. Roger Sanford had taken his own life during the standoff with police. The investigation concluded that Roger Sanford was the sole suspect in his wife's death, classifying the tragic event as a murder-suicide. Consequently, no arrests were made, and the case did not proceed to trial.
