In the evening hours of May 5, 2025, a tragedy unfolded in the Dellwood area of North St. Louis County, Missouri, involving 11-year-old Marshaun Futrell Jr. Police were dispatched to a residence on the 1800 block of Longford Drive around 8:15 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered the young boy suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was urgently transported to a local hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that the shooting was accidental. According to police reports, Marshaun and a 13-year-old friend were inside the home handling two firearms that they had discovered in a backpack. During this interaction, one of the weapons discharged, striking Marshaun. A two-year-old child was also reportedly present in the home at the time of the incident. The victim was remembered by his community and coaches as a joyful child and a standout football player with a promising future in the sport.
Following the investigation, authorities arrested the boy’s father, Marshaun Futrell Sr. A search of the residence and a vehicle revealed a total of 12 firearms, many of which were loaded and unsecured, making them easily accessible to the children living there. Prosecutors charged the father with Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the First Degree resulting in death, as well as two additional counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child Creating a Substantial Risk. He was held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
