On Friday, May 9, 2025, the community of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, was shaken by a violent incident that claimed the life of 22-year-old Micah Ledbetter. Known for her warm spirit and deep connections to her family and faith, Micah had been a former member of the JROTC and choir at Cape Central High School before continuing her education in Mississippi.
She had returned to the area where she was raised, but her life was cut short during a disturbance that unfolded in the midtown area of the city.
The events began just before 1:00 p.m. when officers from the Cape Girardeau Police Department rushed to the 1500 block of Whitener Street following reports of gunfire. Upon arriving at the chaotic scene near Louisiana Street, first responders discovered a male individual suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. While emergency personnel attended to his non-life-threatening injuries, police received critical information from a local hospital. Micah had arrived at the emergency room separately, suffering from severe gunshot wounds sustained during the same altercation. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after her arrival.
Investigators with the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad were immediately activated to lead the inquiry into the deadly shooting. Through witness interviews and evidence collection at the scene, detectives quickly identified a suspect. Authorities determined that the gunfire had not been a random act, although they did not immediately disclose the specific motive behind the violence. The investigation pointed toward a 27-year-old female acquaintance of the victims as the primary shooter.
Later that same evening, police arrested Deandra Leeann Patterson in connection with Micah's death and the injury of the second victim. Patterson was taken into custody and formally charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Following her arrest, she was held at the justice center on a $1 million cash-only bond as the community mourned the loss of a young woman remembered for her vibrant smile and dedication to helping others.
