In the early hours of February 9, 2025, the life of 20-year-old Taylor Malik Burton, a young Black man from Saginaw, Michigan, was tragically cut short. At approximately 1:13 A.M., police responded to a call on Stone Street and discovered Burton with gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by the officers and medical personnel who arrived later, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Known affectionately as 'Tay,' Burton was a graduate of Bridgeport High School, Class of 2023, where he was a passionate athlete, playing both basketball and football. His family described him as a charismatic and kind individual with dreams of attending college. He had recently taken a step toward his goals by enrolling at the Auto Diesel Institute of Michigan.
On the night he was killed, Burton was visiting his girlfriend. Investigators believe he got into a car to talk to someone, and upon exiting the vehicle, he was shot. His mother, Tiffany Burton, stated her belief that her son was robbed, asserting that he had his hands up when the incident occurred. She has vehemently stated that her son was not involved in gangs and did not deserve such a violent end. The family has been vocal in their grief and their pleas for justice, urging anyone with information to come forward and break the silence that often surrounds such acts of violence in the community.
For a time, the case remained unsolved, adding to the family's anguish and the community's concern over a string of homicides in Saginaw. However, a break in the investigation led to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect, Vincent Barrera. He has been charged as an adult with open murder and felony firearms. Court records revealed that Barrera and Burton had been communicating via Snapchat prior to the shooting and had arranged to meet on Stone Street. The fatal encounter was reportedly captured on a surveillance video system from a nearby elementary school. During his arraignment, Barrera was denied bond.
