In a tragic turn of events that sent shockwaves through a Detroit neighborhood, 44-year-old Sandra Davis, a beloved mother and grandmother, was found deceased on a Sunday morning in early April 2025. Her life was cut short in a brutal act of violence that also claimed the lives of her 23-year-old daughter, Kourtney Davis, and her 9-year-old granddaughter, Ayva Sutton.
The horrifying discovery was made in an alley on the city's west side, where the bodies of the three generations of women
were found inside a torched vehicle. The family had been enjoying time together, with Sandra's granddaughter being babysat by her aunt, Kourtney. Concern grew for their well-being when family members were unable to reach them after returning from a vacation. Their worst fears were realized when the smoldering car was located near 30th and Milford streets.
Investigators determined that Sandra Davis and her daughter had both been shot, while the young girl had been stabbed to death before the car was set ablaze. The senseless violence of the act left the community and their surviving family members in a state of profound grief and disbelief.
Authorities quickly identified a person of interest in the case: 29-year-old Edward Redding, the ex-boyfriend of Kourtney Davis. A search for Redding ensued, culminating in a police pursuit that ended with his apprehension. During the arrest, a loaded. 38-caliber revolver was recovered from a bag in his possession. Redding, who has a criminal history that includes convictions for armed robbery and carjacking, was on parole at the time of the incident.
While Redding is considered the prime suspect in the triple homicide, he has not yet been formally charged with the murders. He is currently facing federal charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Additionally, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged him with third-degree fleeing and eluding, as well as resisting and obstructing a police officer, stemming from his attempt to evade capture. The investigation into the deaths of Sandra Davis, Kourtney Davis, and Ayva Sutton remains ongoing as the community awaits justice.
