In the spring of 2025, a horrific tragedy befell a Detroit family, leaving the community in mourning. On April 6th, the remains of 23-year-old Kourtney Davis, an African American woman, were discovered inside a burned-out vehicle on the city's west side, near the intersection of 30th and Milford streets. She was not alone; alongside her were the bodies of her 44-year-old mother, Sandra Davis, and her 9-year-old niece, Ayva Sutton.
The initial investigation painted a grim picture of their final moments. Authorities believe that Kourtney and her mother had been shot, while young Ayva was stabbed, before the vehicle was intentionally set ablaze.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a person of interest, 29-year-old Edward Redding of River Rouge, who was identified as Kourtney's ex-boyfriend. The Detroit Homicide Task Force managed to connect Redding to the crime scene through a license plate reader that linked his vehicle to the car where the victims were found. When law enforcement attempted to pull Redding over, he led them on a high-speed chase, running red lights in an attempt to escape. The pursuit ended when he crashed his car and tried to flee on foot, but he was swiftly apprehended by the Michigan State Police.
While Edward Redding has not been formally charged with the triple homicide, his arrest brought other alleged crimes to light. A search of his vehicle at the time of his capture uncovered a firearm, leading to a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. In addition to the federal charge, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged him with third-degree fleeing and eluding, as well as resisting and obstructing a police officer. The investigation into the deaths of Kourtney Davis, Sandra Davis, and Ayva Sutton is ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence to determine if further charges will be brought against him in connection with the brutal slayings. The community has been left to grieve the profound loss of three generations of one family, holding vigils and calling for justice.
