Following an investigation by Rockford Police Detectives and the Intelligence Unit, 30-year-old Jovaris Porchia of Rockford was identified as the
suspect. The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized two counts of First-Degree Murder against Porchia. He was subsequently taken into custody and lodged in the county jail.
Khalil Mahmood Esaw-El, born on July 29, 1974, in Harvey, Illinois, was the son of Evie Lynch-Hakeem and Charles E. Esaw, Sr. He embraced Islam in 1992 and was known for his deep faith and commitment to family. Khalil was a husband to Jacki Cave Esaw and a father to seven children. He worked as an over-the-road semi-truck driver and was passionate about breeding pit bulls. His life was marked by a dedication to justice and community.
In the wake of his death, Khalil's family initiated a fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for his children. The community's response highlighted the impact he had on those around him.
