On July 2, 2023, Joey Torres, a 14-year-old from Rockford, Illinois, lost his life to gun violence. He was one of two brothers who were victims of the same incident; his brother, Jorge Torres, 17, was also killed. Jorge was pronounced dead at the scene, while Joey succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
