In the quiet community of Steele, Kentucky, a tragic event unfolded on Saturday, January 11, 2025, shattering the peace of the small town. On that day, Kentucky State Police troopers and investigators were called to a residence on Laurel Fork, where they made a grim discovery. Inside, they found 42-year-old Christopher Matthew Lester, a male resident of Steele, who had succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pike County Coroner's Office, and his body was subsequently sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
The investigation into the shooting quickly gained momentum, leading law enforcement across state lines in pursuit of those responsible. The first suspect, Michael Brown, was apprehended in Virginia on the same day of the incident. A few days later, on Tuesday, a second suspect, Anthony Clyde Browning, was arrested in Mingo County, West Virginia. Both men were charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The case took another turn the following day with the arrest of a third individual, Michael Shortridge. Initially, Shortridge had reportedly identified Brown as the shooter. However, information obtained by police on Wednesday implicated him as well. Upon further questioning, Shortridge allegedly admitted to shooting Lester, though he claimed he did so under duress from Brown.
