In the small town of Lake Arthur, Louisiana, the life of 14-year-old Nayomie Marie Fontenot was tragically cut short on the night of May 7, 2025. An African American female known for her bright and energetic nature, Nayomie was a student at the James Ward Center for Excellence in Jennings, where she was regarded as intelligent and fun-loving. She shared a close bond with her family and friends, and her sudden death left the community in deep mourning.
On that fateful Wednesday evening,
just before midnight, Nayomie was visiting a close friend at a residence in the 1200 block of State Street. The friendly gathering turned into a scene of violence when a shooting occurred, and Nayomie was fatally wounded. The circumstances that led to the shooting are still being pieced together by law enforcement, who have been met with challenges in their investigation.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, authorities arrested 18-year-old Jonathan Simien, a resident of Lake Arthur. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the illegal carrying and discharge of a weapon. Simien is currently being held in the Jeff Davis Parish Jail without bond. According to the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff, the suspect has not been cooperative with investigators, providing no information about a possible motive or the events that transpired.
The investigation remains ongoing, with detectives working to validate information provided by witnesses and family members.
