African American male Derrick A. McKinney, 57, from Chicago, died on February 2, 2025. Before dawn that Sunday, officers were called to a home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, on the 8500 block of South Parnell Avenue, around 3:15 a.m. Inside, they found the 57-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said a 60-year-old woman was still at the scene when officers arrived.
She was taken into custody, and a weapon was recovered. Detectives from Area Two opened the investigation; early reports did not announce charges or identify the woman. Follow-up coverage the same day echoed that she remained in custody, with no additional suspects publicly named.
In the hours after the shooting, authorities released few details about what led to the gunfire inside the residence. The case was marked as an active investigation, with officials noting that information would come from Area Two as they worked to determine the circumstances of the killing.
