Jovan Dovantae Hopkins, a 22-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 9, 2015, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood. On that fateful evening, Jovan and his brother, Dequan Hopkins, were walking in the 5200 block of South Emerald Avenue when the situation took a deadly turn. Dequan, 19 years old at the time, opened fire on a stopped SUV.
Unfortunately, Jovan crossed the street during the shooting and was struck in the armpit. Despite his efforts to get back up, he collapsed and was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 9:33 p.m. Jovan was a resident of the 4900 block of Walsh Avenue in East Chicago, Indiana.
Dequan Hopkins was subsequently charged with murder while committing another forcible felony and aggravated discharge of a firearm for the shooting death of his brother. The Cook County state's attorney's office and Chicago Police were involved in the investigation. Dequan was ordered held without bond and was scheduled to appear in court again on the following Monday.
