On August 30, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the death of 49-year-old Katrina J. Brown. The incident began around 9:30 p.m. when Brown was sitting on a porch in the 11800 block of South Indiana Avenue with another man. An unknown individual in a dark-colored SUV drove by and initiated a drive-by shooting, targeting the individuals on the porch.
The man on the porch, who possessed a concealed carry license, responded by firing back at the SUV. The SUV driver subsequently fled the scene. Despite the return fire, Brown was struck by bullets in the face and arm during the exchange. She was immediately treated by Chicago fire crews and transported to Roseland Hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The Chicago police, specifically Area Two detectives, are currently investigating the incident. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The scene yielded more than two dozen shell casings, highlighting the intensity of the gunfire.
Community outreach and violence prevention groups, such as Roseland Ceasefire, were actively engaged in the neighborhood following the incident. These groups knocked on doors, spoke with community members, and sought to gather more information about the shooting to prevent further violence and retaliation. Street Pastor Donovan Price, who frequently responds to homicides in the area, expressed his hopes for a calm weekend and the need for continued community engagement to address the issue of gun violence.
