On the evening of January 2, 2025, a gun sale on the southeast side of Indianapolis turned into a scene of violence, leaving one man dead and two others critically injured. The deceased was identified as 29-year-old Sebastian Prayer Jones. The incident, which marked the city's first homicide of the year, unfolded in the 3200 block of Capsella Lane, near South Arlington and Troy avenues, when police were dispatched following reports of a shooting shortly before 9 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered three men suffering from gunshot wounds. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two victims were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.
Investigations revealed that the shooting stemmed from an altercation that began during the sale of a firearm. What was supposed to be a transaction escalated into a physical confrontation and then gunfire. Five individuals were believed to be inside the home at the time, with two managing to escape through a window. Multiple firearms were recovered from the scene as evidence.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Hayden Dedrick. Initially questioned on the night of the incident and released, Dedrick was later taken into custody with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Task Force. He was formally charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated battery. According to investigators, a disturbance involving a firearm had occurred between Jones and another person inside the residence. It is believed that Dedrick fired at Jones in an attempt to protect his friend, whom he also accidentally injured in the process. Detectives further believe that Dedrick left to get more ammunition, returned, and fired additional shots, hitting a third person.
Despite Dedrick's arrest on charges related to the other individuals shot, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office determined that the shooting death of Sebastian Jones was a justifiable action in the defense of another. Jones's father acknowledged his son's struggles with addiction and that he had been released from jail on a drug charge only two days before his death. He expressed his belief that his son would not have survived if he remained in Indianapolis. Sebastian was remembered by his family as a loving and generous person and a talented creative who expressed himself through music, tattoos, and his way with words.
