In the early evening of January 22, 2025, the life of 28-year-old Rashad Kingsberry was cut short in a burst of gunfire at a southeast Atlanta apartment complex. The male victim was discovered by Atlanta police officers just after 5:30 p.m. inside a Nissan Rogue near the entrance of the Riverwood Apartments on Conley Road. He was unresponsive in the driver's seat, having sustained gunshot wounds to his head and torso. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The apartment complex where the shooting occurred has a history of crime and neglect and is considered one of the metro area's persistently dangerous complexes.
The investigation into Rashad Kingsberry's death quickly pointed to a drug deal that had taken a violent turn. Detectives uncovered text messages sent to Kingsberry just minutes before the shooting, arranging the purchase of marijuana at the Conley Road location. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed two individuals in dark clothing approaching Kingsberry's vehicle shortly after his arrival. A struggle ensued at the vehicle's door, which ended with Kingsberry being shot.
Through the investigation, police identified 23-year-old Mical Walcott as the individual who had contacted Kingsberry to set up the marijuana purchase. Walcott was taken into custody and subsequently admitted to shooting Kingsberry with an AR-15 assault rifle. He has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and is being held without bond. At the time of his arrest for Kingsberry's murder, Walcott was already in the county jail on separate criminal charges.
