In a tragic turn of events that shattered a quiet Lancaster, South Carolina community, 44-year-old Christina McVay and her young son lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. The family, in an act of kindness, had opened their home to a man in need, a decision that would have devastating consequences.
The tranquility of a Sunday afternoon on Mosteller Drive was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Inside her home, Christina McVay and her 6-year-old son, Colin, were shot by a man their family had been helping. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Jacob Tyler Sobieraj, had been living in the family's garage after they met him at church and offered him a place to stay as he was homeless.
In a chilling 911 call, Sobieraj himself alerted authorities, confessing to the shootings of a woman and her child. When Lancaster County sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they found Sobieraj armed in the yard. An exchange of gunfire ensued, and Sobieraj was fatally shot by the officers. No law enforcement officers were injured in the shootout.
Inside the residence, deputies discovered Christina and her son suffering from grave gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Tragically, the young boy succumbed to his injuries the following day. Christina McVay fought for her life for several more days before she too passed away from her injuries on Thursday, March 13th.
