In the quiet town of Lancaster, South Carolina, the life of 35-year-old Stephanie Hunter Johnson was tragically cut short on the night of Thursday, January 12, 2023. What began as a seemingly ordinary evening at her 15th Street home ended in a violent home invasion that would leave a family shattered and a community in mourning.
Around 9:30 p.m., a knock at the door broke the calm.
When no one answered a verbal inquiry from inside, the door was forcefully breached by two individuals cloaked in dark clothing, their faces obscured. Inside the residence with Stephanie were her fiancé, her 15-year-old son, and another 13-year-old son. A violent struggle ensued between the male resident and the intruders. During the altercation, gunshots rang out, striking both Stephanie and her 15-year-old son. The assailants then fled the home on foot.
When law enforcement arrived, they found a devastating scene. Stephanie Johnson had succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at her home. Her teenage son had sustained serious gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. He was expected to survive his injuries. The violent nature of the crime, described by the Lancaster County Sheriff as a 'very violent home invasion with a terrible outcome,' prompted an immediate and intensive investigation.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of two suspects. Kristopher Orlando Thomas, 21, and an unidentified 15-year-old male were taken into custody. Authorities reported that during the home invasion, Thomas was armed with a gun and the juvenile suspect wielded a baseball bat. Both Thomas and the teen faced a litany of charges, including murder, attempted murder, first-degree burglary, and attempted armed robbery. Thomas faced an additional charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Following his arrest, Thomas was held at the Lancaster County jail without bail, while the juvenile was detained at a South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice facility.
