In the fall of 2021, a verbal altercation in Lancaster, South Carolina, tragically cut short the life of 38-year-old Takeisha Massey. On Saturday, October 9, 2021, Massey was shot multiple times at a residence on Caroline Court following a dispute. First responders arrived to find her with life-threatening injuries. She was quickly transported to the Medical University of South Carolina-Lancaster hospital, but tragically succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after her
arrival.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly led police to a suspect, 21-year-old Curtis William Townsend IV. Authorities discovered that Townsend was the boyfriend of Massey's daughter. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Townsend attempted to evade capture by discarding the firearm and concealing himself in an outdoor trash can near the scene of the crime. However, a coordinated effort by the Lancaster Police Department and the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office deputies with the county's violent crimes task force resulted in his quick apprehension.
Townsend was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was held at the Lancaster County jail after being denied bail. In July 2023, the case came to a resolution in Lancaster County criminal court. Townsend entered an Alford plea of guilty to the charge of murder. This type of plea allows a defendant to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that the prosecution has enough evidence to likely secure a conviction at trial. Following his plea, a judge sentenced Curtis Townsend to 40 years in prison for the murder of Takeisha Massey.
