On a cold January evening in Lancaster, South Carolina, the life of 23-year-old Jenika Jaraya Jones, a Black mother of three, was tragically cut short. On January 19, 2012, while at her home on Roseanna Lane, three men attempted to rob her. In the course of the crime, Jones was shot and killed. The harrowing event was witnessed by her 4-year-old son, who bravely ran to a neighbor's house to get help for his mother. The neighbor found Jones on her couch and alerted the authorities.
Witnesses reported seeing three men with hoods covering their faces fleeing the scene around 10 p.m.
The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an intensive investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the arrests of two suspects, 24-year-old Devontae Clinton and 20-year-old Wayne Blakeney. Both men were charged with murder and held without bond at the Lancaster County Detention Center. The investigation continued as authorities sought a third individual connected to the crime.
A third suspect, 19-year-old Al Martinez Green, was later apprehended and also charged with murder in connection with Jones' death. The arrests brought a sense of relief to the community and a step towards justice for Jenika Jones and her family. The community mourned the loss of the young mother, with her mother participating in a prayer march against violence in the neighborhood shortly after two of the suspects were apprehended.
