In the early hours of a cold January morning in Indianapolis, a sense of unease settled over an apartment complex near Shadeland Avenue and Fall Creek Road. Inside one of the apartments, 47-year-old Bethany Collette was in a situation that would soon turn tragic. She had been planning to leave an abusive relationship and move back to her hometown of Chicago, a fresh start she desperately sought.
She had even sent text messages to her ex-husband just hours before, expressing her urgent need to get away and sharing a picture of a recent hand injury, a stark indicator of the danger she was in.
Police were dispatched to the apartment complex shortly before 2 a.m. on January 13, 2025, for a domestic disturbance. The situation quickly escalated as a man, later identified as her boyfriend, had barricaded himself inside the apartment with Bethany and another woman. The suspect, was also found with a critical, self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital under police custody.
