On the night of January 15, 2025, a call reporting a burglary in progress brought Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers to the Overlook at the Fairgrounds Apartments, a complex situated in the 1700 block of East 38th Street. It was approximately 11:30 p.m. when authorities arrived, but they found no evidence of a forced entry. Instead, inside a fourth-floor apartment, they discovered the body of 38-year-old Jeremy Lee Patton, a Black / African American male who had sustained
significant trauma. His death was later officially ruled a homicide by the Marion County Coroner's Office.
Jeremy Patton did not reside at the apartment complex, though he was reportedly familiar with the property. In a chilling final conversation just before he was killed, Patton had called his ex-wife, Angela Patton. He told her he was at the apartment building and was worried about certain individuals on the fourth floor who he felt disliked him. Angela had urged him to leave the premises, but that was the last time they ever spoke. The situation was further complicated by a prior incident just days earlier, when police had been called to the very same apartment. On that occasion, Patton had witnessed a fight between two other men, which resulted in one of them being arrested on an outstanding warrant.
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery of Patton's body, the scene indicated a violent struggle had taken place. Investigators began piecing together the events of that night, hoping that surveillance cameras at the complex would yield crucial clues. A person of interest was detained at the scene by detectives, but this individual was subsequently released pending further investigation. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department continues its investigation, but as of now, no suspects have been named and no arrests have been made in the killing of Jeremy Patton. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to finding those responsible for his death.
