In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 7-year-old Davion Gunter, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On March 16, 2025, police responded to a distressing call from an apartment in the 3700 block of East Ross Parkway. The caller reported that a child had been shot and was bleeding. Upon their arrival at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers discovered young Davion with a gunshot wound to his torso.
He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Inside the apartment, a somber scene unfolded for investigators. They found several other children and multiple adults present at the time of the shooting. Detectives from the Wichita Police Department's homicide and Exploited and Missing Children's units immediately began interviewing witnesses to piece together the events that led to the fatal incident. The investigation revealed a heartbreaking story of unsupervised children and a loaded firearm left within their reach. While the adults, including Davion's mother and grandmother, were reportedly drinking in the parking lot, the children were left alone inside the apartment. The children had been playing with a toy gun when a 4-year-old reportedly discovered a real handgun in a purse and fired it, striking Davion. The seven other children in the home were subsequently placed in protective custody.
In the wake of the tragedy, police arrested 25-year-old Tasha Diane Dillard, the resident of the apartment and an acquaintance of the victim's family. The children informed investigators that the gun came from Dillard's purse, which had been left on a kitchen counter. Dillard was initially charged with first-degree felony murder and seven counts of aggravated endangering a child. However, in September, she reached a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter and one count of aggravated child endangerment. In October, a judge sentenced Tasha Dillard to 37 months in prison.
The devastating loss of Davion brought to light a history of prior concerns for his welfare. Records from the Kansas Department of Children and Families, released after his death, indicated that Davion had previously been the subject of child welfare checks. In 2017, at just nine months old, he was hospitalized with a skull fracture. In 2021, at the age of three, he suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. In both instances, the allegations of abuse and lack of supervision were ultimately unsubstantiated. The community mourned the loss of a young life, with Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan describing the incident as a "heartbreaking loss for our community."
