In the spring of 2019, the life of Robert Nigh Raymond, a 70-year-old White/Caucasian male from Wichita, Kansas, came to a tragic and unexpected end. A lifelong resident of Wichita, he passed away on April 2, 2019, in what was later determined to be a murder-suicide. The community was left to grapple with the sudden loss of a man known for his dedication to his work and his passions.
Authorities with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office were called to a home in the 11400 block of East
Turtle Creek Circle on the morning of April 2nd after a residential alarm was triggered. Upon their arrival, deputies found the front door open. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Robert Raymond and his 54-year-old wife, Johnna M. Raymond. Both were found in their bed with apparent gunshot wounds.
The ensuing investigation by the Sheriff's Office concluded that Johnna Raymond had shot and killed her husband before turning the gun on herself. The motive behind the tragic event was not immediately released by investigators. As a result of this determination, there were no arrests made, and no outside suspects were sought in connection with Robert Raymond's death. The case was classified as a murder-suicide, with his wife identified as the sole perpetrator.
Robert, known to his friends and family as "Bob," was a well-regarded member of his community. He had retired after a long and successful 38-year career as a Senior Engineering Technician for the Kansas Department of Transportation. His interests extended beyond his professional life; he was a founding member of the Wichita & South-Central Kansas Bird Dog Clubs. In a testament to his athletic prowess in his younger years, he had been inducted into the USSSA Softball Hall of Fame in January of 2019, just a few months before his untimely death. He was a father to three daughters and a grandfather.
