Keshawn D. Kent, a 24-year-old man, was fatally shot on the night of April 21, 2025, in Belleville, Illinois. Authorities responded to reports of gunfire in the 200 block of Freedom Drive, where they discovered Kent unresponsive outside an apartment complex. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. The St. Clair County Coroner, Calvin Dye Sr., confirmed Kent’s identity and last known address in Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri.
Belleville Police Captain Todd Keilbach stated that officers arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a call about the shooting at 11 p.m. Despite efforts to provide life-saving treatment, Kent succumbed to his injuries. Investigators, including Belleville detectives and Illinois State Police crime scene specialists, processed the scene and began interviewing witnesses. Authorities reported that key evidence was recovered, leading to the identification of a person of interest in connection with the case.
Further investigation revealed that Kent had entered an apartment at the complex through a side window. Inside, an altercation ensued involving Kent, a 22-year-old woman with whom he shared children, and a 24-year-old man who was also present. Reports indicate that Kent allegedly assaulted the female resident, and evidence of a physical confrontation was found inside the apartment. During the struggle, Kent attempted to fight the other male, who then discharged a firearm, striking Kent. Kent fled the apartment and collapsed in the parking lot, where he later died.
Following a review of the case by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office, authorities declined to file charges against the individual who fired the weapon. No additional suspects are being sought, and the investigation is considered closed.
