In the spring of 2020, a young boy's life was tragically cut short in Columbia, South Carolina. Seven-year-old Knowledge Alex Sims was at his home on Tarragon Drive on the evening of April 29th when violence erupted outside. More than a dozen gunshots were fired into the residence where two adults and seven children, including Knowledge and his 13-year-old sister, were present.
Knowledge was struck by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
His older sister was also wounded in the shooting but survived her injuries. Investigators quickly determined that the children were not the intended targets of the shooting. The incident left the community shaken and authorities pleading for information from the public to find those responsible for the 'cowardly act of violence.'
For eighteen months, the case remained a focus for the Columbia Police Department. Despite a lack of initial tips, investigators utilized ballistic evidence and conducted numerous interviews to piece together the events of that night. Their persistence ultimately led to a breakthrough in the investigation.
In October 2021, authorities announced the arrests of two men in connection with the fatal shooting. Travon Wilson, 24, and Kwatez Carter, 21, were charged with murder, attempted murder, and several other offenses related to the incident. At the time of his arrest, Carter was already in custody on unrelated charges. The arrests brought a sense of relief to the community and were a significant step towards justice for Knowledge Sims and his family.
