As he made his way near the intersection of North 46th Street and Larimore Avenue, a car passed by, and its occupants opened fire. Brandin was struck by the gunfire in the brazen daylight shooting. First responders arrived at the scene around 2:40 p.m. to find him with gunshot wounds.
They administered CPR while rushing him to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Those who knew Brandin remembered him as a funny and caring young man with a good heart, though he had faced some recent struggles. About a month before his death, he had been expelled from Burke High School and arrested for bringing a handgun to school. He was charged with felony possession of a firearm on school grounds and was out on bail. Following the incident, he had been transferred to Parrish Alternative School.
