On an April evening in 2017, a gathering of friends in an Omaha, Nebraska, apartment would end in tragedy for 29-year-old Brandon Mutum, a White male. The date was April 20th, and what began as a social get-together took a dark turn over a seemingly trivial matter. An argument erupted between Mutum and another man, 21-year-old Malcolm Ward. The source of the conflict was empty beer bottles that had been left around the apartment, which belonged to a friend of Mutum's.
As the disagreement
over the beer bottles escalated, the verbal dispute quickly turned violent. In a sudden and fatal turn of events, Ward produced a firearm and shot Mutum. The single gunshot proved to be fatal, ending Brandon Mutum's life in a senseless act of violence that stemmed from a minor disagreement among acquaintances. The incident occurred at an apartment located at 4314 North 65th Street.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Malcolm Ward was arrested and charged in connection with Brandon Mutum's death. In a plea agreement with prosecutors, the initial murder charge was lowered to second-degree murder. Ward pleaded no contest to this lesser charge, as well as to two weapons charges. Ultimately, for his role in the killing of Brandon Mutum, Malcolm Ward was sentenced to a prison term of up to 60 years.
