Vincent Burns, a 22‑year‑old Black male, spent the late hours of January 23, 2022, in the crowded and restless atmosphere outside Jet Sports Bar in Omaha’s Florence neighborhood. What began as a large disturbance quickly escalated when gunfire erupted near the entrance just before midnight. Off‑duty officers working security called for backup as chaos unfolded. Burns was struck by the gunfire and collapsed as officers rushed to perform CPR, trying to keep him alive until medics arrived.
He was taken to Nebraska Medicine, where he later died from his injuries. Two others, Marquetta Pope and Trevon Walker, were also wounded but survived.
In the months that followed, detectives worked through witness accounts, surveillance footage, and leads that slowly shaped the direction of the investigation. For more than a year, the case remained open, with police urging anyone with information to come forward. Then, on April 9, 2023, Omaha Police announced a breakthrough: the arrest of 26‑year‑old Kanesha Plater. She was charged with second‑degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony, accused of firing the shots that killed Burns during the disturbance outside the bar. The arrest came after coordinated efforts by the Homicide Unit, the Omaha Metro Fugitive Task Force, and the Gang Unit, marking a turning point in a case that had weighed heavily on the community.
As the case moved into the courts, Plater eventually entered a no‑contest plea to manslaughter and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. The judge later handed down consecutive sentences: 18 to 20 years for manslaughter and 27 to 45 years for the weapons charge. With the conviction and sentencing, the long investigation into the events of that January night reached its conclusion, providing a measure of resolution to a tragedy that began outside a neighborhood bar and rippled far beyond it.
