On a late Thursday evening in Wilmington, Delaware, the life of 57-year-old Michelle L. Clifton, a female resident of the city, was irrevocably altered. On June 27, 2024, in the 300 block of East 23rd Street, gunfire erupted, leaving Clifton critically wounded. Emergency responders rushed her to a local hospital, where she would cling to life for several months.
The shooting sent shockwaves through the community and prompted an intensive investigation by the Wilmington Police Department as they worked to piece together the events of that night and bring those responsible to justice.
The investigation into the shooting of Michelle Clifton led detectives to identify two suspects: 26-year-old Gyheim Fitzgerald and 22-year-old Ke'shawn Fortune. As authorities built their case, Clifton continued to fight for her life. However, her battle came to a somber end on October 31, 2024, when she succumbed to the injuries she had sustained in the June attack. Her death marked a tragic turning point in the case, elevating the gravity of the charges the suspects would face.
In the wake of Clifton's passing, the pursuit of justice intensified. Arrest warrants for Fitzgerald and Fortune were issued on October 29, 2024. The following day, Gyheim Fitzgerald was taken into custody by the Uniformed Services Division. Ke'shawn Fortune was apprehended on November 1, 2024, by the New Castle County Police Department. Both men were charged with a litany of serious offenses, including attempted murder in the first degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and first-degree conspiracy. Following Clifton's death, authorities began the process of upgrading the charges against the two men. They were committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, with Fitzgerald's bail set at $568,796 and Fortune's at over $1.1 million, as the legal proceedings against them commenced.
