In the quiet, early morning hours in the Underwood-Petersville community, a domestic altercation escalated into a tragedy that claimed two lives and left another person injured. The male victim was 61-year-old Ralph L. Payne, who was fatally shot by his own son. The events unfolded at Payne's residence on Sylvan Street in Florence, Alabama.
On that Tuesday morning, Ralph Payne's 34-year-old son, Jesse Weston Payne, arrived at the home and a confrontation began.
The argument, the cause of which is still being investigated by the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office, involved both Ralph and his wife, who was Jesse's stepmother. At some point during the dispute, Jesse Payne produced a semi-automatic pistol and shot his father.
As the tragic events unfolded, Ralph Payne's wife fled the residence in an attempt to find help. Her stepson, however, pursued her and shot her near a neighbor's house before she could get to safety. Deputies from the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the area around 3:20 a.m. after receiving reports of a suspicious person. They first encountered the injured stepmother, who, despite her wounds, was able to direct them to her home on Sylvan Street. She was later treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital.
Upon entering the Payne residence, law enforcement officials discovered a grim scene. Both Ralph Payne and his son, Jesse, were found deceased inside. The investigation concluded that after shooting his father and stepmother, Jesse Payne had taken his own life with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found still in possession of the semi-automatic pistol. The incident was officially ruled a murder-suicide, and as the perpetrator was also deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the death of Ralph Payne.
