In the autumn of 1964, the life of 46-year-old Edith Johnson was tragically cut short. On October 18th, the white female was discovered strangled to death in Kentucky. Her case officially remains an unsolved murder, a cold file that has left lingering questions for decades.
While no individual was ever formally charged or arrested for her death, authorities have long considered her a suspected victim of a notorious figure in the region's criminal history, Frank J. Leaver. Leaver was a convicted murderer and a suspected serial killer whose violent spree was believed to have spanned over three decades, from 1933 to 1964. His methods of killing were varied, reportedly including shooting, strangulation, and even suspected poisoning.
Leaver was ultimately convicted for the 1962 murder of Anita Christine Barmore, a crime for which he received a life sentence. He would later die in prison in 1981, taking any potential confessions or further details of his alleged crimes to the grave. Despite the strong suspicion of his involvement in numerous other murders, including Edith Johnson's, a lack of concrete evidence prevented law enforcement from definitively linking him to her death.
